Hobie Mirage 360 Drive Updates

If you have purchased a new 2017 Hobie Kayak from us or anyone else you will want to read this. This addresses any kayaks shipped to dealers before November 1 2016. So even if you end up buying a Hobie Kayak in July, this could impact your kayak. In a nutshell, if your drive is feeling slugish or is just not working as well as expected this applies to you. Proper Fin Adjustment For Hobie® MirageDrive® 180
We have discovered that our factory has over-tightened the fin adjuster knobs on MirageDrive 180s delivered in the past few weeks.

In this condition the fins are not able to properly “travel” from side to side. The performance and feel of the drives will be sluggish as well. While we try to allow users to fine tune the drives as a feature… over tensioning the fins is problematic. This can also lead to damage of the traveler slot in the “boom” fitting.

We will be building drives in the loosest setting from now forward. We request that dealers and users do the same adjustments by following the instructions on page 12, item 2 of the manual to “loosen” the fins as highlighted below. The fins must be able to travel easily from side to side.

To properly adjust the MD180 fin tension, turn the adjuster knob until the stainless lock nut nearly touches the embedded brass nut. That would be the loosest fin setting.

MirageDrive Mast Bend / Proper Straightening
When a MirageDrive mast contacts the bottom or other obstruction it is possible to bend the mast. Proper technique for straightening the mast will avoid further damage to the drive.

Once a mast is bent, you can straighten it again, in most cases. To straighten a mast, first remove the fin. This is a MUST, due to possible damage to the fin and/or outhaul block fittings. If you over-bend the mast forward, you can place significant load on the aft attachment point of the fin and damage can be caused.

To remove a MD180 fin, use a pair of pliers to hold the stainless nut located at the bottom end of the adjuster screw. Turn the adjuster knob as shown in the diagram below. Once the nut is removed you can continue to turn the knob until the entire screw is released from the fin.

hobie-mirage-360-drive-adjusting-fin
For older version MirageDrive fins, remove the clevis pin and ring.

Once the fin is removed, one option is to bend it forward while the drive is installed in the MirageDrive well. Position the hull on its side or upside-down. This will hold the drive securely while you leverage the mast back into proper position.

Another option and easier… if you have a vise… is to clamp the bent mast into the vise and by pulling on the drive for leverage, bend it back into position.

Re-install the fin.

These parts will be available for repair of damaged drives, but we still will not be selling complete drives until next spring or summer.

Turbo fin upgrade kits also continue to be on hold until drive production is fully up-to-speed.

Hobie Eclipse SUP UPDATED Expected delivery dates

Thanks for all of your continued patience. We feel like a 6 year old waiting for Christmas. Except  December 24th date keeps moving on us. In an attempt to keep all of you as up to date as possible We wanted to tell you everything we know about when to expect seeing any more Eclipse SUP boards.

As an authorized Hobie Eclipse SUP dealer we can only are allotted a few Eclipse SUP boards per location on the initial shipments. Believe me its not many at all and we have tried hard to get more. Some Eclipse boards are starting to  ship from Hobie to dealers around the nation. Most dealers will not see there first boards until June. We project getting a first shipment of Eclipse boards in May. That initial shipment has been pre-sold. If you were one of the lucky few that ordered your board right away. Well you’re going to get one early! Nice work. We have another shipment booked and we guesstimate it will be here in July. At this point we are sold of that  shipment as well. We predict some may not want to wait that long and may cancel. Totally understand and no problem. Let us know if that’s what you’d like to do and we will take care of you.

So on to the issue at hand. You want a board and you have not had a chance to reserve one yet…. Get ready …. set …wait! Yea sorry. But that’s what it’s looking like.

Hobie just released the message below. Basically it says the next round of Eclipse SUP Boards are not going to ship until September at the earliest. Ouch …wow. Not sure how to take this news. Certainly disappointing for both you as amazing customers as well as us – best retailer ever:) . To that, it is what it is and not a lot either of us can do about it. The Eclipse boards have been so well received Hobie simply cant make enough. Its crazy. Hobie suggests below that customers should reserve boards with there local dealers by placing a deposit with us to reserve your board. Well that’s a good way to do it. Why? Well Hobie is requiring dealers put a deposit for each pre-ordered board with them. To be open its kinda odd but makes sense. Alright. So how should we do this? Currently our website is set up to charge all or nothing. we cant really charge for partial payment. We are working on a solution to that. in the mean time Place an order on our site and we will refund all but $300 for any Boards ordered with a September delivery date.

As always have any questions please give us a call at 1-877-725-2925

Here’s the statement Hobie just released:

      “Message to Our Hobie Mirage Eclipse Customers”

May. 11, 2016 by Hobie Cat Company

Due to the resounding response to the Mirage Eclipse, we recommend you contact your local Hobie dealer to reserve yours today.

First and foremost, we want to thank you for your positive response to our newest product category, the game-changing Hobie Mirage Stand Up Boards! We certainly expected this innovative new category to have a major impact on the world of watersports when we launched the Mirage Eclipse series in April; we have been amazed and grateful beyond belief that the response would be so instant, so global, and so eager —- clearly a product gone viral!

It is evident that the Mirage Eclipse has resonated with water sports enthusiasts the world over. It is particularly amazing to have a response of this magnitude, virtually selling out most of our dealers’ Mirage Eclipse allocations immediately, given that this product has sold primarily without the opportunity to ‘touch and feel’ the product. Our Mirage Eclipse video has clearly brought this product to life in a huge way.

To say this response was unprecedented is a gross understatement, which is saying a lot given the dozens and dozens of successful product launches Hobie Cat Company has been a part of through the years. We sincerely apologize for the delay in our ability to deliver the volume of product needed to satisfy the market demand for the Hobie Mirage Eclipse series. While we have already started shipping meaningful quantities of Mirage Eclipse boards, it is becoming apparent that our deliveries will stretch out beyond this summer season in most markets before satisfying initial customer demand.

If you have not yet ordered your Hobie Mirage Eclipse, our best suggestion is that you contact your local Mirage Eclipse dealer and find out what the current backlog is. In most cases, it will be possible to place a deposit towards future production to reserve your place in line for the next available Mirage Eclipse in your area.

With a deposit in place, your Hobie dealer will stay in communication with you as to when you may expect delivery as we provide them with production updates.

We sincerely regret not being able to get each and every one of you your Hobie Mirage Eclipse board tomorrow! We can, however, promise you that it will be worth waiting for —- the customers who have received their Mirage Eclipses are head-over-heels over their fun new boards that have opened up a whole new view from the water for them as they Step On and Go.

Hobie’s mission continues to be getting everyone on the water having the time of their lives with our many unique, innovative watersports products, as we have been doing since 1950. Most of these Hobie® products are readily available today throughout the world. In the case of the Mirage Eclipse series, we are committed to getting those on the shelves of our global dealer network as soon as we possibly can. On behalf of the entire Hobie Cat Company team, thanks so very much for your support of the Hobie Brand and our products. Hobie Eclipse SUP Expected delivery dates

“Wow!” is all we can say to the overwhelming response to Hobie’s new Eclipse SUP boards! Hobie expected these to do well but no one saw the explosive media coverage and resulting customer demand coming!

We have been fielding a lot questions since Hobie’s introduction of this board, primarily surrounding availability. In an attempt to keep all of our customers well informed, here is the process we have set up and what we know to date:

– We are currently taking pre-orders for all sizes and all colors

– The pre-orders are on a “first come, first served” basis, based on the availability of the board you’ve pre-ordered. This does mean that your buddy down the street who ordered after you could get their board first if they ordered something different and it becomes available to us before the one you ordered does.

– Hobie currently has two shipments of boards scheduled. Our early shipment (scheduled for late April/mid May) is SOLD OUT while we still have a couple of boards available in the second shipment (scheduled for late May/early June). We expect a third shipment to arrive 30-60 days following that, though Hobie is not taking pre-orders or providing a schedule for this shipment.

This is, of course, further out than we – and you, undoubtably – were hoping to see. Hobie is doing their best to keep up with the overwhelming demand and to ship evenly across their Eclipse dealerships.

We thank all of you who have placed orders with us! Will we be doing our best to keep you in the loop by contacting you directly to give you our best estimate on when you’ll see your board. Remember, you can cancel your order for a full refund at any time.

Thank you for your understanding and patience! We know how excited you are to get on your Eclipse! We can’t wait to get on one either!

Coming this September! The Hobie Pro Angler 17T

We are incredibly excited to announce that we will have the just announced, all new Pro Anger 17T in store this September, ready for you and your favorite fishing partner to head out on your next adventure!

http://www.kayakshed.com/hobie-kayaks/hobie-kayaks-pro-angler-17-tandem

Below is Hobie’s press release:

Oceanside, California, July 15, 2014 – Fishing out of one of Hobie’s Pro Angler 12- or 14’s is so much fun that Hobie is now making it possible for two anglers to share the experience in the same boat. Introducing the Pro Angler 17T. Three different configurations include traditional in-line tandem seating, face-to-face social tandem or solo, all with enough room for man’s best four-legged friend…and with plenty of space for standing, casting and fly fishing in comfort.

This new Pro Angler 17T integrates all the features of its predecessors including Hobie’s iconic patented MirageDrive® pedal system and Vantage XT seating and adds new features such as the H-Rail System for customizing accessories, a tracking skeg for covering long distances and a battery platform for an optional trolling motor, crate or small cooler. The result is like nothing else on the market. A human-powered 17’ fishing machine. No gas needed, no-motor-zone compliant and made in the U.S.A. It does not get better.

“We challenged ourselves to expand our Pro Angler collection with a fully decked-out guide-style tandem where the aft passenger could provide MirageDrive power and put the front angler on the fish. We also wanted it to have the ability to hold an optional trolling motor for use as a bass boat,” commented Doug Skidmore, president of Hobie Cat Company. “Our new Pro Angler 17T meets that challenge.”

All anglers know that customizing their watercraft is a major part of ownership fun. The new patent-pending twelve-sided H-Rail mounting system runs along each side of the boat and provides a quick and easy way to secure multitudes of accessories. Two-each H-Rail Mounting Plates, Rod Racks and Cup Holders come stock with the boat. An infinite number of optional accessories can then be added to the H-Rail such as tackle bins, fish finders, camera mount or rod holders.

The large rudder provides steerage and maneuverability while the new drop-down tracking skeg can be deployed when covering long distances in challenging conditions. An optional anchor trolley kit for anchors, drift chutes, nets or stakeout poles is easy to install using eight strategically placed brass inserts on each side. An optional Power-Pole® Micro with a customized Hobie mount can be added to the stern.

Our Sportsman Show Pro Angler!

With the increase of great fishing kayaks and kayak fishing as a sport, we decided to take our “show on the road” last month to the 2013 Pacific Northwest Sportman’s Show! We had a great time making new friends, chatting with “old” ones and sharing what we’ve learned about fishing from kayaks in all of the great waters the Pacific Northwest has to offer (sea, whitewater, slow moving water and lakes!) .

One of our most talked about boats was a fully loaded Hobie Kayak Pro Angler. This was a special rig we did for the show and, with two more heading out the door this morning, we thought we’d share this very popular set up:

* Hobie Pro Angler (turbo fins, seat, paddle AND water bottle included!)
* Hobie Livewell Bait Tank
* Hobie Lowrance Elite 4 DSI Fish Finder GPS
* Robocup (not online but available)
* Hobie Rod Holder Extensions
* Hobie H-Bar
* Hobie Ram Fly Rod Holder & Base
* Hobie Full Size Fish Finder Installation Kit
* Hobie RAM Fish Finder Full Size Mount

Sound like a dream set up? We thought so and, according to a lot of the feedback we received at the show, we weren’t alone! Here are a couple pictures of the boats heading to new homes and new water this morning (with the lovely Angie providing a person for a little scale):

Fishing Modifications to a Hobie Revolution 11 : Part 1

Recently we were given the very exciting opportunity to do a custom modification for a customer on a Hobie Kayaks Revolution 11, transforming it into one of the meanest fishing kayaks out there! The Revolution 11, the little brother of the always popular Revolution 13, is a new addition this year to Hobie’s line up. Though it’s smaller size allows this boat to be more nimble and easier to transport than the Revolution 13, it hasn’t taken away from it’s stability and has only slightly reduced it’s on-water speed. With fishing accessories already built into it’s DNA, such as two molded-in rod holders and a location for Hobie’s Livewell system, it was the perfect boat to use as our customization platform! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking you along with us as we install the following (and more!):
* Lowrance Structure scan
* Lowrance HDS Fish Finder
* Lowrance Sirius Satellite
* Lowrance Sonic Hub
* Ram Fly Rod Mount
* Hobie Anchor Trolley
* Hobie eVolve Motor

Let’s Go Fishin’!

Hobie Kayaks recently announced that they’ll be partnering with the Inshore Fishing Association (IFA) to be the presenting sponsor of the newly-formed IFA Kayak Fishing Tour. The IFA Kayak Fishing Tour offers an alternative for those anglers whose preference is for a non-motorized, self-propelled boat. The events will be held on Sundays, each one following a Saturday IFA Redfish Tournament designed for motorized boats of 15′ and longer.

“Hobie Fishing, like the IFA, is dedicated to educating the fishing public on the importance of maintaining the country’s fishing resources and promoting the friendly spirit of competition,” commented Doug Skidmore, president of Hobie Cat Company.

So, after a little research on The Red Fish Tour’s website, we’re sad to say that it doesn’t look like any of the tour stops will be coming to our neck of the woods. That doesn’t mean, however, that they won’t be coming to yours – so check! And even if you, like us, won’t get to see a bunch of guys cruising in kayaks for the biggest fish in the pond, that doesn’t mean you can’t give kayak fishing a try.

There are a lot of benefits of kayak fishing vs. other methods:
* Lower cost of investment than a motorized boat
* Easier to transport than a motorized boat
* Long lifespan and virtually maintanence free
* The lack of noise means that you’ll get in the fish faster than anyone with a motor
* The mobility of a kayak will allow you to go places a bigger, motorized boat can’t go
* You’ll be able to fish holes and locations you can’t with a pair of waders
* And at the end of the day you’ll get some exercise to get a head start on that BBQ & refreshments you plan to enjoy later

We sell a lot of boats at the shop that are suitable for kayak fishing. While most are multi-purpose, several are definitely focused on fishing. Of those boats, the Hobie fishing kayaks are definitely a stand out. It’s hard to beat being able to propel with your feet, leaving your hands free for your rod and gear. Not only that, Hobie has a great line up of fishing accessories that will always guarantee a full Christmas wish list.

If you’re in our area, we have Hobie’s ready to go for rental/demo. Take them out and see what you think of kayak fishing!

Attack at Wells Island

Last night was a balmy 100 bazillion degrees (plus or minus) in Hood River, so we took the Hobie Sport and Revolution out to cool ourselves and the dog off. Starting from the new dock, Wells Island is a great out and back paddle (or peddle, in this case), so we loaded up the dog and headed out into the Columbia.

Out on the water, it really was the perfect evening – much cooler than in town and the water is nice and warm this time of year. We did a couple re-enactments of our favorite Tour de France stages – Schleck vs. Armstrong – and then John lured me through the moss/weed barrier around Wells Island with promises of a secret lake.

No sooner had he put one foot out of the boat than our situation turned to something like this (but replace bees with mosquitoes):

Our leisurely peddling took on a whole new urgency on the way out of there. In the process, we found an unexpected benefit of the Hobie kayak: hands free paddling allows you to take care of a lot of attacking mosquitoes. That said, next time we venture to Wells Island at dusk, we’ll take bug spray.

How to get a Cat for your Dog

We’re big fans of our new shop cat. Hobie cat, that is. You can sail, you can peddle, you can paddle… What’s not to love? And now Hobie just announced trampolines for the Mirage Adventure Island! In addition to adding more fun (who doesn’t like trampolines?), they also do the following:

* Add space for carrying gear (so you CAN take that extra fishing pole)
* Allow you to move weight outboard for better performance in windy conditions
* Comfortable sitting or laying down position (pass the tanning lotion!)
* Carry additional crew / kids / pets (does not increase basic weight capacity)
* Reduce spray in cockpit

Want to give the ‘er a try? We have a demo at the shop! Come on down and take her for a test sail/peddle/paddle!
